Maplewood Flats – Maplewood Wild Bird Sanctuary

Posted on: February 2nd, 2011 by moojoes

If your kids are bird lovers Maplewood Wild Bird Sanctuary, the last undeveloped waterfront wetland on the North Shore of Burrard Inlet, is the place to go. The 96 hectare area is composed of mud flats (over 90%) and some salt marsh. Several disused log pilings provide perching and nesting habitat and kids can see many native birds on a self-guided tour.

On the first saturday of each month there is a free bird survey at 8 am. Observe and learn your birds at 25 locations in the conservation area and on the second saturday of each month there are free interpretive “theme walks” held at 10 am.  For more information contact Maplewood Wild Bird Sanctuary at 604.922.1550. Access to Maplewood Flats is through the parking area of the Pacific Environmental Science Centre on Dollarton Highway.

Location: Maplewood Flats, 2645 Dollarton Highway, North Vancouver (2 km east of the second narrows).
